2000 Census of Population and Housing HIGHLIGHTS Eastern Visayas
The total population of Eastern Visayas as of May 1, 2000 is 3.6 million.
The 2000 population of Eastern Visayas increased by 243 thousand over the 1995 census figure of 3.4 million (with September 1, 1995 as reference date) and 556 thousand over the 1990 census figure of 3.1 million.
The population of Eastern Visayas grew at the rate of 1.51 percent in the second half of the nineties. This means that during this period, the population increased by almost 49 thousand persons per year on the average, or 6 persons per hour.
If the average annual growth rate of the population of Eastern Visayas continues at 1.51 percent, then the population of this region is expected to double in 46 years.
The number of households in Eastern Visayas increased to 715 thousand, or by 54 thousand from the 1995 figure of 661 thousand. The average household size decreased slightly to 5.04 persons from the 1995 figure of 5.08 persons. This means that for every 100 households, the number of members decreased by four persons.
Among the six (6) provinces in Eastern Visayas, Leyte registered the largest population at 1.59 million persons, followed by Samar with 641 thousand persons. Biliran had the smallest population at 140 thousand persons.
Southern Leyte was the fastest growing province in the region with an average annual growth rate of 2.73 percent, while Eastern Samar was the slowest with 0.79 percent.
The institutional population of Eastern Visayas as of May 1, 2000 is 7,401 persons. This is lower than the 1995 figure of 8,739.
