SORSOGON Sorsogon in the Bicol Peninsula, is the southernmost province of Luzon. The province is bounded by the province of Albay and Albay Gulf on the north; Pacific Ocean on the east; Burias and Ticao Passes on the west; and Samar Sea and San Bernardino Strait on the south. Upon settling in the town of Gibalong, the Spaniards decided to explore the inland. When they reached the small river, now known as Sorsogon Bay, they asked the name of the place to the native they met in the place. Thinking that the Spaniards were asking for the direction, the native answered "sologon" which means "trace the river by going upstream. Sologon became Sorsogon through constant use. On October 17, 1894, Sorsogon was established as a province. Sorsogon is a major producer of abaca and said to be the producer of the best hemp in all the provinces in the Bicol Region. Coconut and rice are the other crops widely grown in the province. The province also has significant fishing industry. Among the tourist attractions were the century-old towers or baluartes, the Bulusan Volcano, Bulusan Lake, Bulus Spring, Mapaso Spring and the Limestone Cave.
