Laguna's Population Reached Nearly Two And A Half Million (Results from the 2007 Census Of Population)

Population increased by more than half million

The population of Laguna was 2,473,530 persons as of August 1, 2007 based on the 2007 Census of Population. This figure was higher by 507,658 persons over the population count of 1,965,872 persons in 2000. These population counts translated to an average annual population growth rate of 3.22 percent from 2000 to 2007.

In 2007, the number of households in Laguna reached 542,906 or 124,974 more than the number of households reported in 2000. The average household size in 2007 was 4.5 persons, slightly lower than the average household size of 4.7 in 2000.

City of Calamba was the most populated area

Among the 27 municipalities and 3 cities in Laguna, the City of Calamba was the most populous with 14.6 percent share to the provincial population. It was followed by San Pedro (11.4 percent), City of Santa Rosa (10.8 percent), Biñan (10.6 percent), San Pablo City (9.6 percent), and Cabuyao (8.3 percent). Santa Cruz, the provincial capital, shared only 4.1 percent. The rest of the municipalities contributed less than four percent each.

Sex ratio remained at 98 males per 100 females

Of the 2,470,090 household population of Laguna in 2007, there was almost equal distribution of males (49.6 percent) and females (50.4 percent). The sex ratio was recorded at 98 males for every 100 females; the same sex ratio recorded in 2000.

Half of the population were below 23 years old

In 2007, the household population of Laguna had a median age of 23 years, which means that half of the household population were below 23 years old. The median age in 2000 was 22 years.

Persons aged 0 to 4 years contributed the highest share of 11.4 percent to the household population, followed by those in age groups 5 to 9 years (11.1 percent) and 10 to 14 years (10.2 percent).

There were more males than females in age brackets 0 to 14 years and 35 to 39 years, while females outnumbered males in all other age brackets.

Three out of five persons were of voting ages

More than half (61.3 percent) of the household population of Laguna were in the voting age group (18 years old and over). The proportion of females (51.5 percent) in the voting-age population was higher than that of the males (48.5 percent).

Overall dependency ratio decreased to 57 dependents per 100 persons in the working age group

The proportion of household population in the working age group (15 to 64 years) was 63.8 percent, young dependents (0 to 14 years) comprised 32.8 percent, and old dependents (65 years and over) accounted for 3.4 percent.

The overall dependency ratio was 57, which means that for every 100 persons in the working age group, there were 57 dependents (51 young and 6 old dependents). In 2000, there were 60 dependents (55 young and 5 old dependents) for every 100 persons in the working-age population.

Never-married persons comprised more of males than females

About 45.0 percent of the household population 10 years old and over in 2007 were married while 43.3 percent were never married. The marital status of the rest of the population was either widowed, divorced/separated, in common law/live-in marital arrangement, or had no report on marital status. Among never-married persons, there were more males (51.5 percent) than females (48.5 percent). Females outnumbered the males in the rest of the categories for marital status.

Higher school attendance among males than among females

Of the household population 5 years old and over, 28.6 percent had attended or finished elementary education and 38.4 percent had reached or completed high school. The proportion of academic degree holders was 10.4 percent, an increase of 4.8 percentage points from the 2000 figure of 5.6 percent.

More females than males had attained higher levels of education, as majority of those with academic degree holders (56.9 percent) and post baccalaureate courses (57.2 percent) were females.

Among the household population 5 to 24 years old, more than three-fifths (62.8 percent) attended school at anytime during School Year 2007 to 2008. School attendance among males (63.7 percent) was higher than that among females (61.9 percent) during said school year.

Number of occupied housing units increased by almost 123 thousands

From a total of 409,772 occupied housing units in 2000, the number of occupied housing units in 2007 reached 532,600, indicating an increase of 30.0 percent. The average number of households for every 100 occupied housing units in 2007 and 2000 was the same at 102 households. However, in terms of number of persons per occupied housing unit, the ratio of 4.6 persons per occupied housing unit in 2007 was lower than the ratio of 4.8 reported in 2000.

Most occupied housing units were made of strong materials

More than half (56.8 percent) of the occupied housing units in Laguna used concrete/brick/stone as construction materials for outer walls. On the other hand, the proportion of occupied housing units with outer walls made of wood dropped from 13.2 percent in 2000 to 11.3 percent in 2007. A decline in the use of bamboo/sawali/cogon/nipa as outer walls was likewise reported from 5.6 percent in 2000 to 4.0 percent in 2007.

Moreover, majority (91.7 percent) of the occupied housing units in 2007 had roofs made of galvanized iron/aluminum. The use of wood as roofing material decreased from 1.7 percent in 2000 to 0.9 percent in 2007.
