The total population of Romblon, as of May 1, 2000, was 264,357 persons. The figure was higher by 19,703 persons over the 1995 Census of Population (POPCEN) results and five times the population of the province in 1903.
Annual population growth rate was registered a 1.67 percent, higher by 0.31 percentage point than that of the 1995 figure (1.36 percent). If the current rate continues, the population of Romblon will double in 41 years.
The number of households rose to 53,731 or an increase of 3,985 households over the 1995 figure. The average household size remained at 4.91 persons.

On the other hand, the municipality of Concepcion was the least populated accounting to 1.77 percent of the total population.
Males dominated the young population
There were more males (133,823) than females (130,525). This figure resulted to a sex ratio of 102.53 males for every 100 females.

Dependency ratio was 84.50
More than 50 percent of the population comprised the economically active population (15 to 64 years old). Population aged 0 to 14 years constituted 40.67 percent of the total population while those 65 years old and over made up 5.13 percent.
The overall dependency ratio in 2000 was 84.50 persons, lower than the 1995 ratio of 84.62 persons.

One-half of the population attended elementary education
Out of the total household population five years old and over, 50.41 percent had attended/finished elementary education; 26.83 percent, high school; 9.88 percent, college; 2.66 percent, post secondary studies; and 0.30 percent, post baccalaureate studies.

The proportion of children aged 5 to 6 years who were incoming Grade 1 (had completed pre-school education) was 2.47 percent.

Rombloanons comprised 64.82 percent of the household population
More than 60 percent of persons in Romblon classified themselves as Rombloanons while the rest were either Bantoanon (22.99 percent), Kiniray-a (8.06 percent), Tagalog (0.76 percent) or belonged to other ethnic groups (3.38 percent).

ROMBLON
Romblon is a cluster of twenty islands lying in the Sibuyan Sea. The province is situated south of Marinduque, west of Masbate, east of Mindoro and north of Panay Island
In 1582, the Spaniards first visited the province, which was cited in Miguel de Loarca's writings as "Lomlon" or "Doblon". In 1901, Romblon was created as a province but due to insufficient income, it became a sub-province of Capiz from 1907 until 1917. On January 1, 1947 under Republic Act No. 38, it regained its provincial status.
Agriculture is the main industry in the province and major crops are rice, abaca and copra. The waters of the Sibuyan Sea provide year-round fishing opportunities. It is also known for its weaving, basketry and delicate crochet laces and bedspreads. Quarrying of marble for sculpture and construction purposes is also very popular in Romblon. Tourist attractions are the Cathedral of Saint Joseph, islets with white sand beaches and magnificent waterfalls.

It was the 11th census of population and 5th census of housing undertaken in this country since the first census in 1903. It was designed to take an inventory of the total population and housing units all over the Philippines and to collect information about their characteristics. Census day for the Census 2000 was May 1, 2000 (12:01 a.m.). Enumeration started on May 1, 2000 and lasted for about 30 days.
