LA UNION La Union was carved out from the towns of Ilocos Sur and Pangasinan. It is a melting pot of culture that has allowed the province to become the crossroads of the Ilocos. The province lies between the China Sea on the west and the foothills of Cordillera Mountain range in the east. The mountains form the common boarder with the province of Benguet. The province of Ilocos Sur lies to the north and the province of Pangasinan bounds it to the south. The province was created through a Decreto Superior issued on March 2, 1850 by Governor General Antonio Maria Blanco. Its status as a province was formally approved by a Royal Decree of Queen Isabela II of Spain on April 18, 1854. San Fernando, the provincial capital, is the administrative regional center for Region I. It is also a national port of entry servicing both domestic and international shipping. La Union showcases its rich cultural heritage in museums and historical sites throughout the province. The Museo de la Union showcases archaeological finds from the region and the Pindangan Ruins also attracts tourist to La Union. |
