About Us - NSO Activities 

A. Censuses
  1. Census of Population and Housing - a decennial undertaking to obtain an inventory of the total population and housing units in the country. It gathers information on the size and distribution of the population as well as information about its demographic, social, economic and cultural characteristics. It also gathers information on the supply of housing units, their structural characteristics and facilities
  2. Census of Agriculture and Fisheries - a complete count of all farm operators in the Philippines. It gathers basic characteristics of each farm such as size, loction, tenure status, source of irrigation, crops planted, livestock/poultry raised, agricultural practices, and others
  3. Census of Establishments - a comprehensive collection and compilation of statistical information pertaining to the economic activities of establishments in the country
  4. Census of Buildings - an inventory of buildings in the urban areas of the country, their characteristics, usage and the economic activities engaged in by the occupants
B. Socioeconomic Household Surveys
  1. Labor Force Survey - a nationwide survey of households undertaken every quarter, designed to provide statistics on levels and trends of employment, unemployment and underemployment for the country, as a whole, and for each of the administrative regions, including provinces and key cities
  2. National Health Survey - a nationwide survey designed to provide estimates of various indicators of the health condition of the population
  3. National Demographic Survey - a nationwide survey of population which gathers information for the estimation of current levels and patters of facility, mortality and migration and the factors affecting them
  4. Family Income and Expenditures Survey - a nationwide survey, conducted every three years, that gathers data on family income and family living expenditures and related information affecting income and expenditure levels and patterns in the Philippines
  5. Survey on Overseas Filipinos - intends to monitor the number and economic contribution of overseas workers as well as determine the levels and trends of international migration as these affect the demographic, economic and social situation of the country as a whole
  6. Survey on Household Operated Activities - gathers information on the economic activities of households, particularly those considered as household operated, to assess the role of these kind of activities in the national economy
  7. Functional Literacy, Education and Mass Media Survey - a nationwide survey that gathers information on the functional literacy status, educational and skills qualifications and exposure of the population to mass media
C. Industry and Price Surveys
  1. Weekly and Monthly Price Surveys - serve as bases for the construction of the Consumer Price Index, which indicates average changes in prices of commodities and services consumed by an average Filipino household.
    They also serve as bases of the Wholesale Price Index, a general measure of monthly changes in the price levels of commodities that flow into the wholesale trade intermediaries, and the Retail Price Index, a measure of the changes in the retail prices at which retailers dispose of their goods to consumers or households.
  2. Monthly, Quarterly and Annual Surveys of Establishments - provide statistics on the structure, trends and levels of economic activity in the country. Quarterly and annual surveys cover eight sectors while the monthly survey, the manufacturing sector only
  3. Annual Survey on Construction Projects of Local Governments - a nationwide survey of construction projects undertaken and funded by the local governments in all cities, municipalities and provinces to obtain data on new constructions, additions, alterations and repairs of public structure
  4. Quarterly Survey of Employment and Compensation in the National Governments - a nationwide undertaking that collects statistics on number of employees by type of appointment and functions and total salaries and wages paid to them
  5. Quarterly Survey on Employment and Compensation in the National Government - provides data on employment in the national government and compensation and benefits given to them
D. Administrative-Based Statistics
  1. Foreign Trade Statistics - compiled from import and export documents submitted by importers and exporters or their authorized representatives to the Bureau of Customs as well as documents for imports cleared through the export processing zones
  2. Commodity Flow (Domestic Trade) Statistics - data generated from the flow of commodities within and among the different regions of the country by means of air, water and rail transport system
  3. Private Building Construction (Building Permits) Statistics - data generated from building permits issued on the size of the floor area, type and value of building constructions proposed to be constructed
  4. Vital Statistics - data generated from birth, death and marriage certificates
E. Economic and Social Studies
  1. Input-Output Table - a matrix that provides detailed accounting of the amount of goods and services that individual sectors buy from and sell to each other
  2. Population Studies - include preparation of researchers on fertility, mortality, migration, nuptiality and other demographic characteristics as well as construction of life tables and preparation of population estimates, projections of households, labor force, housing, and the like
  3. Economic Studies - include preparation of short range economic analysis as well as construction of life
F. Civil Registration Services
NSO functions as central repository of all civil registry documents such as birth, death and marriage certificates. About 70 million documents are kept in the archives with about 2.5 million records added annually.

The public is served through the issuance of

  1. certified copy of birth, death and marriages certificates
  2. authentication of civil registry documents acquired from the Office of the Local Civil Registrars
  3. issuance of Certificates of Authority to Solemnize Marriage to Religious Ministers
  4. issuance of certification on single status of persons
  5. supervision and coordination of Local Civil Registrars nationwide
