ILOILO CITY: THREE OUT OF FIVE PERSONS BELONGED TO VOTING POPULATION (Results from the 2000 Census of Population and Housing, NSO)
Population expected to double in 35 years
The total population of Iloilo City, as of May 1, 2000, was 366,391 persons. The figure was higher by 31,852 persons over the 1995 Census of Population results, and translated to a 1.97 percent annual population growth rate for the 1995 to 2000 period. This was higher than the 1.47 percent growth rate in the 1990 to 1995 period. If the annual population growth rate continues at 1.97 percent, then the population of the province is expected to double in 35 years. Likewise, a corresponding increase on the number of households was also observed, from 64,811 households in 1995 to 72,333 households in 2000. This resulted to an average household size of 5.15 persons, higher than the 5.10 average household size recorded in 1995.
More females than males
Iloilo City had 188,771 females and 177,620 males. These figures resulted to a sex ratio of 94 males for every 100 females. There were more males than females in the age group 0 to 14 years. At older age groups, there were more females than males.
More females in the voting population than males
There were 229,523 persons or 62.64 percent of the total population belonging to the voting population (aged 18 years and above). Among the voting population, the proportion was higher for females (52.56 percent) than for males (47.44 percent).
Of the total female population, 103,979 or 55.08 percent were in the childbearing or reproductive ages (15 to 49 years).
Three out of five persons belonged to economically active population
Almost 60 percent of the population comprised the economically active population (aged 15 to 64 years). Population aged 0 to 14 years (young dependents) constituted 30.87 percent of the total population while 4.94 percent for 65 years old and over (old dependents).
The overall dependency ratio in 2000 was 55.78, lower than the 1995 ratio of 58.92. This meant that for every 100 economically active persons there were 56 dependents, of which, 48 persons were young dependents and 8 persons were old dependents.
More female degree holders than males
Education is highly valued by Filipino families. Majority of the household population aged five years and over in Iloilo City had a formal education. More than 30 percent had attended or completed high school level; 26.43 percent, elementary; 13.14 percent were academic degree holders; 11.92 percent were college undergraduates; and 10.28 percent with post secondary education. In addition, the proportion of children aged 5 to 6 years who were incoming Grade 1 students (had completed pre-school education) was 1.91 percent.
Six out of ten (59.70 percent) academic degree holders were females. There was also a higher percentage of females among those who had attended or completed post baccalaureate studies (51.58 percent), were college undergraduates (53.02 percent), attended or completed high school education (52.59 percent) and elementary education (50.30 percent). In contrast, there were more males who had attended or completed post secondary education (55.94 percent) than females (44.06 percent).
Hiligaynons/Ilonggos comprised 97.42 percent of the household population
Almost all of the household population (97.42 percent) in Iloilo City classified themselves as Hiligaynons/Ilonggos. The rest were either Cebuano (0.37 percent), Karay-a (0.35 percent), Tagalog (0.30 percent) or were from other ethnic groups (1.57 percent).
More widowed females than males
Of the total population aged 10 years and over, 43.48 percent were married; 46.79 percent never married; 4.86 percent widowed; 0.92 percent separated/divorced persons; and 2.79 percent in other marital arrangements.
Eight out of ten (81.09 percent) widowed persons were females.
Majority of the housing units were single houses
Of the occupied housing units in Iloilo City, 93.41 percent were single houses, 2.34 percent were duplex while 1.77 percent were multi-residential.
Majority (68.92 percent) of the occupied housing units either needed minor repair or did not need repair at all. This was lower by 2.72 percentage points from the 1990 figure (66.2 percent). One out of five occupied housing units was relatively new; it was built from 1996 to 2000.
Roofs and outer walls of most houses made of strong materials
Close to 85 percent of the total occupied housing units used galvanized iron/aluminum for the roof and 30.69 percent used concrete/brick/stone for the outer walls. The proportion of the housing units that used the combination of galvanized iron/aluminum for roof and concrete/brick/stone for walls was 29.92 percent, higher by 12.23 percentage points than the 1990 figure (17.69 percent).

TECHNICAL NOTES
Average Household Size – average number of people who live in the household
Growth Rate – the rate at which the population is increasing (or decreasing) in a given year due to natural increase and net migration, expressed as a percentage of the base population
Median Age – the age at which exactly half of the population is young and half is old
Sex Ratio – the ratio of males to females in a given population expressed as the number of males per 100 females
Age-Dependency Ratio – the ratio of persons in the "dependent" ages (under 15 years and over 64 years) to those in the "economically productive" ages (15 to 64 years old) in the population
Household – a social unit consisting of a person or a group of persons who sleep in the same housing unit and have common arrangements in the preparation and consumption of food
The 2000 Census of Population and Housing (Census 2000) was undertaken by the National Statistics Office (NSO) in May 2000, as mandated by Commonwealth Act No.591, Batas Pambansa Blg. 72 and Executive Order No 121. It was the 11th census of population and 5th census of housing undertaken in this country since the first census in 1903. It was designed to take an inventory of the total population and housing units all over the Philippines and to collect information about their characteristics. Census day for the Census 2000 was May 1, 2000 (12:01 a.m.). Enumeration started on May 1, 2000 and lasted for about 30 days.
Being a highly urbanized city, the population of Iloilo City was excluded in the population counts of Iloilo province. As defined in 1991 Local Government Code, a city is considered highly urbanized if it has an annual income of not lower than fifty million pesos based on 1991 constant prices, as certified by the city treasurer; and its population is at least two hundred thousand (2000,000) inhabitants, as certified by NSO.
