MANDAUE CITY: POPULATION TO REACH HALF A MILLION IN 2011 (Results from the 2000 Census of Population and Housing, NSO)
Population growth rate increased to 6.36 percent
The 2000 Census of Population and Housing (Census 2000) results showed that Mandaue City registered a total population of 259,728 persons, higher by 64,983 persons over the 1995 Census of Population (POPCEN) results. This figure recorded a 6.36 percent annual population growth rate, lower by 4.91 percentage points than the annual population growth rate during the 1990 to 1995 period. A corresponding increase on the number of households was also recorded at 54,882 households, higher by 13,941 households over the 1995 figure. This resulted to an average household size of 4.72 persons, slightly lower than the average household size (4.75 persons) recorded five years ago and the national average of five persons.
The population of the city to double after eleven years
If the average annual growth rate of the population continues at 6.36 percent, the population of Mandaue City is expected to double after eleven years, increasing by 16,519 persons every year or about 45 persons per day.
Subangdaku, the most populated barangay
Of the 27 barangays in Mandaue City, Subangdaku was the largest in terms of population size, comprising about 7.4 percent of the total population of the city. This was followed by Banilad (6.6 percent), and Pakna-an (6.2 percent). The least populous was Casili (0.8 percent).
Predominantly Cebuano
Of the total household population, over 93 percent classified themselves as Cebuano. About 3 percent classified themselves as Bisaya/Binisaya. The remaining four percent belonged to the other ethnic groups that included Boholano, Tagalog and Hiligaynon/Ilonggo.
Half of the population below 22 years old
Mandaue City had a median age of 22 years, higher by one year than that of 1995. This meant that half of the population were below 22 years old.
Sex ratio recorded at 98
Females outnumbered their male counterparts with the sex ratio of 98. In 1995, the same sex ratio was also recorded.
More females aged 20 - 24 years old
In 2000, the age-sex structure of Mandaue City deviated from the usual pyramid shape as shown in Figure 1 where the females in the age groups 15 to 19 and 20 to 24 protrude among the lower age groups. The 20 to 24 age group also occupied the largest proportion of the total population.
About three in every five women belonged to the childbearing ages
Women in childbearing or reproductive age group (15 to 49 years) comprised 58 percent of the total female population, higher by two percentage points from the 1995 figure (56 percent).
Three-fifths of the population belonged to voting ages
There were 156,487 persons or more than 60 percent of the total population belonging to voting ages (18 years old and over). Among them, the proportion of females was slightly higher (51 percent) than that of the males (49 percent).
Economically active persons increased by about 39 percent
About 64 percent of the total population or 165,677 persons belonged to productive ages (15 to 64 years). This resulted to about 39 percent increase from the 1995 figure of 119,456 persons. About 34 percent were young dependents (aged 0 to 14 years) while more than two percent were old dependents (aged 65 years and above). The overall dependency ratio in 2000 was 57, lower than the 1995 ratio of 61.45. This meant that for every 100 persons aged 15 to 64 years, there were about 57 dependents, i.e., 53 young dependents and four old dependents.
Nine out of every ten persons attended school
More than 92 percent of the total household population aged five years and over had attended school; 35 percent, elementary; 32 percent, high school; and 25 percent with higher education.
Females dominated among those who had attended school. It was only among those with post secondary courses and were college undergraduates, the males dominated in number.
One widower in every four widows
About 46 percent of the total population 10 years old and over were married while 44 percent were single. The remaining 10 percent were either widowed, separated/divorced, with other arrangements or with unknown marital status.
Among single and married persons, the proportions of males and females were almost equal. On the other, the proportion of widows was noticeably higher (77 percent) than the widowers (23 percent).
Most of the households preferred single houses
Majority of the housing units were single houses (80 percent). Over 79 percent of the total housing units needed no repair or if needed one, with minor repair only. Over 24 percent were built from 1991 to 1995; 24 percent, 1981 to 1990; and 22 percent, 1996 to 2000.
Median floor area at 23 square meters
The houses in Mandaue City had a median floor area of 23 square meters. This meant that half of the total housing units had a floor area of below 23 square meters. About 25 percent of the housing units had a floor area of 10 to 19 square meters; 19 percent, less than 10 square meters; and 17 percent, 20 to 29 square meters. Over 5 percent of the total housing units reported to have a floor area of at least 120 square meters.
Nine out of ten houses had roof made of galvanized iron/aluminum
In 2000, ninety percent of the housing units in Mandaue City, had roof made of galvanized iron, higher by 38 percentage points from the 1990 figure (52 percent). Only five percent of the housing units still had a roof made of either cogon, nipa and anahaw. As to the construction materials of the outer walls, houses with outer walls made of either concrete, brick, or stone increased by eight percentage points, from 12 percent in 1990 to 20 percent in 2000. Moreover, 44 percent had outer walls made of wood and 22 percent, had either half concrete, brick, stone or half wood.

MANDAUE CITY
Mandaue City is situated on the central coastal plains of the Province of Cebu, approximately at 10-19' - 40.34" degrees latitude and 123-5-28,16"degrees longitude. Mandaue has an average elevation of land at 55 ft. above sea level. It is bounded by the municipality of Consolacion to the north, the City of Cebu to the south and west, and by the Mactan Channel to the east.
Between 1580 to 1700 when the Spaniards succeeded in taking over the majority of the Philippine Archipelago, Mantaui/Mantawi was formally constituted into a 'pueblo' or town and then was officially known as town of Mandaue. The locality covered a total land area of about five thousand (5,000) hectares. During the first year of its township, Mandaue had 42 barrios and with a population of 21,086.
The year 1948, years after the second World War, a new emerging progressive municipality and a more determined community re-established the prominence of Mandaue in social, economic and cultural concern. The year 1964 ushered an era of a more spirited effort towards social and economic development. The same year marked the beginning of a determined bid for a more autonomous local government and the perpetuation of Mandaue as an independent and progressive community. Thus, in June 21, 1969, the City of Mandaue was born.

TECHNICAL NOTES
Average Household Size – average number of people who live in the household
Growth Rate – the rate at which the population is increasing (or decreasing) in a given year due to natural increase and net migration, expressed as a percentage of the base population
Median Age – the age at which exactly half of the population is young and half is old
Sex Ratio – the ratio of males to females in a given population expressed as the number of males per 100 females
Age-Dependency Ratio – the ratio of persons in the "dependent" ages (under 15 years and over 64 years) to those in the "economically productive" ages (15 to 64 years old) in the population
Household – a social unit consisting of a person or a group of persons who sleep in the same housing unit and have common arrangements in the preparation and consumption of food
The 2000 Census of Population and Housing (Census 2000) was undertaken by the National Statistics Office (NSO) in May 2000, as mandated by Commonwealth Act No.591, Batas Pambansa Blg. 72 and Executive Order No 121. It was the 11th census of population and 5th census of housing undertaken in this country since the first census in 1903. It was designed to take an inventory of the total population and housing units all over the Philippines and to collect information about their characteristics. Census day for the Census 2000 was May 1, 2000 (12:01 a.m.). Enumeration started on May 1, 2000 and lasted for about 30 days.
Being a highly urbanized city, the population of Mandaue City was excluded in the population of Cebu. As defined in the 1991 Local Government Code, a city is considered highly urbanized if it has an annual income of not lower than fifty million pesos based on 1991 constant prices, as certified by the city treasurer; and its population is at least two hundred thousand (200,000) inhabitants, as certified by NSO. |
