CITY OF MANILA:EXPERIENCED A NEGATIVE POPULATION GROWTH RATE
(Results from the 2000 Census of Population and Housing, NSO)

Population growth rate slowed down to –0.97%

The population of City of Manila, as of May 2000, was 1,581,082 persons. This was down by 73,679 persons as compared to 1,654,761 persons recorded in the 1995 Census of Population (POPCEN). For the period 1995 to 2000, the annual population growth rate for the City of Manila was –0.97 percent, lower than that of the 1990 to 1995 period (0.62 percent).

The number of households decreased to 333,547 as compared to 347,173 households in 1995. The average household size recorded in Census 2000 was 4.71 persons, slightly lower than the 1995 figure of 4.74 persons and the national average of five persons.

City of Manila, the second biggest city in the National Capital Region in terms of population

Manila ranked second in terms of population size in the National Capital Region. This city contributed 15.92 percent to the 9.9 million population in the region. At the national level, the city shared 2.07 percent of the total population of 76.5 million.

Tondo, the most populated

Manila is composed of six congressional districts, of which District I and VI had the biggest population with 23.95 percent and 23.67 percent, respectively of the population of the city.

Tondo which is in two congressional districts (District I and II) was the biggest city district in terms of population size, accounting for 37.34 percent of the total city population. The least populous city districts were Intramuros and Ermita, both under District Five with only 7,466 persons (0.47 percent) and 5,969 persons (0.38 percent), respectively.

Median age was 24 years

City of Manila had a median age of 24 years. This meant that in 2000, half of the population were below 24 years old. In 1995, the median age was 23 years.

Sex ratio was recorded at 95

Females outnumbered their male counterparts with a sex ratio of 95 males for every 100 females. The same sex ratio was recorded in 1995.

Overall dependency ratio was 51

The proportion of young dependents (0 to 14 years) was 30.2 percent, while the proportion of old dependents (65 years and over) accounted for 3.5 percent of the city population. The proportion of economically active population (15 to 64 years) was 66.3 percent.

The overall dependency ratio in 2000 was 50.81. This meant that for every 100 persons aged 15 to 64 years, there were about 51 dependents (46 young dependents and five old dependents).

Higher percentage of female voters

Out of the total population, there were 1.01 million persons or 64.07 percent belonging to the voting population where the proportion of females (52.02 percent) was slightly higher as compared to that of the males (47.98 percent).

More than half of females were in childbearing ages

Out of 810,591 females, 471,307 or 58 percent belonged to childbearing or reproductive ages (15 to 49 years). The highest percentage of which, was reported by women aged 20 to 24 years (20.57 percent).

More educated females than males

About 24 percent of the household population aged five years and over in Manila attended or completed elementary; 34.58 percent, high school; and 32.87 percent with higher education. On the other hand, the number of children aged 5 to 6 years who had completed pre-school and were likely to become Grade I students in the next school year was 23,514 pupils (1.69 percent).

There were more females who attended school. They dominated in number in all levels.

Three out of four were Tagalogs

Of the total household population, 76.7 percent classified themselves as Tagalog. The rest were either Ilocano (3.2 percent), Bisaya/Binisaya (2.8 percent), Bikol/Bicol (2.5 percent), Waray (2.3 percent), or belonged to other ethnic groups (11.1 percent).

Widowed were mostly women

About 44 percent of the total population 10 years old and over were single while 42.52 percent were married. The remaining 13.76 percent were either widowed, separated/divorced, with other arrangements or with unknown marital status.

There were an almost equal proportion of women (50.40 percent) and men (49.60 percent) among single persons. On the other hand, the proportion of widows was noticeably higher (79.05 percent) than widowers (20.95 percent).

Majority of the houses had roof and walls made of strong materials

Majority of the housing units in Manila had galvanized iron/aluminum (76.01 percent) for the roof. For the outer walls, 41.83 percent had half concrete/brick/stone and half wood; 29.32 percent, concrete/brick/stone; and 24.40 percent, wood.

Of the total occupied housing units, 31.38 percent had the combination of galvanized iron/aluminum for the roof and half concrete/brick/stone and half wood for the walls.

Majority of the housing units needed no repair/minor repair

About three out of four housing units in the City of Manila needed no repair or if needed one with minor repair only; 22 percent, needed major repair; 0.7 percent with unfinished constructions; and 0.4 percent, under construction.

CITY OF MANILA

Manila is located in the mainland of Luzon. It is bounded on the north by the City of Caloocan, on the northeast by the City of Quezon, on the east by the Municipality of San Juan and the City of Mandaluyong, on the southeast by City of Makati, on the south by City of Pasay, and on the west by Manila Bay.

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS

June 20, 1574 - King Philip II gave the City of Manila the title "Insigne y Siempre Leal Ciudad" (Distinguished and Ever Loyal City) through a Royal decree.

1595 - it was declared as the capital of the Archipelago and the Royal Decree of March 20, 1596, granted Manila its coast of arms.

July 7, 1892 - the secret revolutionary organization, the Kataastaasan, Kagalanggalangan Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan (KKK), was organized by Andres Bonifacio in the arrabal of Tondo.

August 30, 1896 to August 7, 1901 - Manila was under a military government.

1967 - RA No. 5185, the Decentralization Act, further gave greater autonomy to the City of Manila.

TECHNICAL NOTES

Average Household Size – average number of people who live in the household

Growth Rate – the rate at which the population is increasing (or decreasing) in a given year due to natural increase and net migration, expressed as a percentage of the base population

Median Age – the age at which exactly half of the population is young and half is old

Sex Ratio – the ratio of males to females in a given population expressed as the number of males per 100 females

Age-Dependency Ratio – the ratio of persons in the "dependent" ages (under 15 years and over 64 years) to those in the "economically productive" ages (15 to 64 years old) in the population

Household – a social unit consisting of a person or a group of persons who sleep in the same housing unit and have common arrangements in the preparation and consumption of food

The 2000 Census of Population and Housing (Census 2000) was undertaken by the National Statistics Office (NSO) in May 2000, as mandated by Commonwealth Act No. 591, Batas Pambansa Blg. 72 and Executive Order No. 121. It was the 11th census of population and 5th census of housing undertaken in this country since the first census in 1903. It was designed to take an inventory of the total population and housing units all over the Philippines and to collect information about their characteristics. Census day for the Census 2000 was May 1, 2000 (12:01 a.m.). Enumeration started on May 1, 2000 and lasted for about 30 days.
