IFUGAO: FIVE ECONOMICALLY ACTIVE PERSONS SUPPORT FOUR DEPENDENTS (Results from the 2000 Census of Population and Housing, NSO)
Population growth rate increased to 1.67 percent
The province of Ifugao registered a total population of 161,623 persons in the year 2000 up from 149,598 in 1995. This figure gave the province an average annual growth rate of 1.67 percent, an increase of 1.38 percentage points from the 1990 to 1995 period. The number of households also rose to 31,346, higher by 2,145 households compared to the 1995 figure. This gave an average household size of 5.2 persons, a slight increase from 1995 (5.1) and the national average (five persons).
Alfonso Lista (Potia) was the largest in terms of population size
Among the eleven municipalities in Ifugao, the municipality of Alfonso Lista (Potia), which comprised 13.10 percent of the total provincial population, was the largest in terms of population size. This was closely followed by the municipality of Banaue, Lamut, and Aguinaldo with 12.72, 11.59 and 10.13 percent, respectively. The rest of the municipalities had less than 10 percent share each (Lagawe, 9.45 percent; Mayoyao, 8.78 percent; Kiangan, 8.72 percent; Asipulo, 7.61 percent; Tinoc, 6.05 percent; Hingyon, 6.04 percent; and Hungduan, 5.80 percent).
Ifugao ranked fifth in CAR
Among the six provinces, Abra, Apayao, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, Mountain Province; and one highly urbanized city (Baguio City) in CAR, Ifugao ranked fifth in terms of population size. This province contributed 11.8 percent to the 1.4 million population of the region. At the national level, Ifugao shared 0.21 percent to the Philippine population of 76.5 million as recorded in the Census 2000.
Ifugao had a median age of 19 years
In 2000, half of the population were below 19 years old and the other half were 19 years old and over.
Males outnumbered females
Male population outnumbered their female counterparts with a sex ratio of 104 males for every 100 females. There were more males than females in the age bracket 0 to 54 years. On the contrary, there were more females than males in the age group 55 years and over.
Four dependents for every five economically active persons
The overall dependency ratio in 2000 was 81. This meant that for every 100 persons aged 15 to 64 years, there were about 81 dependents (73 persons aged 0 to 14 years - young dependents; and 8 persons aged 65 years and over - old dependents). The 2000 ratio was lower than the 84.61 ratio reported in 1995.
More female than male academic degree holders
Of the total household population five years old and over, almost half (46.20 percent) had attended or completed elementary education. Twenty two percent had either attended or finished high school while 8.88 percent had attended college. Only three percent were academic degree holders. More than half of those who had attended or finished elementary education (55.5 percent) were males. On the other hand, those who had attended or finished college and post baccalaureate were predominantly females.
Majority were Ifugao
Majority (67.9 percent) of the household population in Ifugao classified themselves as Ifugao. About 13.7 percent considered themselves as Ilocano, and 8.6 percent as Ikalahan/Kalanguya. Other ethnic groups included Ayungan (6.2 percent), and Kankanaey (0.6 percent).
Almost half were still single
Almost half (49.1 percent) of those who were 10 years old and over were single, while 42.3 percent were married. The remaining nine percent were either widowed, divorced/ separated, common-law/live-in or with unknown marital status.
Housing occupancy rate was more than 95 percent
There were 32,903 housing units in Ifugao, of which 31,134 were occupied, or 94.6 occupancy rate. This registered an increase of 12.79 percentage points from 1990 and a ratio of 1.01 household per occupied housing unit or a ratio of 5.19 persons per occupied housing unit.
Single houses were most preferred
Almost all (96.9 percent) of the occupied housing units were single houses. Four out of five occupied housing units needed no repair/minor repair. Less than one-fourth were relatively new (built from 1996 to 2000).
Half of the housing units were made of concrete materials
As to the construction materials used for housing units, less than three-fourths (70.6 percent) of the occupied housing units had roofs made of galvanized iron/aluminum as compared to only 40.4 percent in 1990. Moreover, 50 percent of the occupied housing units had walls made of wood while 16 percent had walls made of bamboo/sawali/cogon/nipa.

IFUGAO
Ifugao is in the Cordillera Central Mountains of Northern Luzon. It is bounded on the north by the province of Mountain Province, on the east by the province of Isabela, on the west by the province of Benguet, and on the south by the province of Nueva Vizcaya.
Ifugao is the home of the famous Banaue Rice Terraces. The extensive mountain ranges that dominate the landscape have been terraced by hand for growing rice because there is hardly any level land. Even the nearby villages are on the mountain slopes. The peaks rise as high as 2,500 meters with lush forests above the rice terraces. Numerous rivers and waterfalls drain into the lowland valleys.
The province's location up in the mountains and its forest cover account for its temperate climate. A short dry season lasts from January to April while it can be very wet during the rainy season.
