(Results from the 2000 Census of Population and Housing, NSO)

Population growth rate increased to 2.63 percent

The province of Kalinga registered a total population of 174,023 persons in the year 2000 from 154,145 in 1995. This figure recorded an average annual growth rate of 2.63 percent, an increase of 0.40 percentage point from the 1995 figure. The number of households also rose to 30,450, higher by 2,595 households from 1995. This resulted to an average household size of 5.7 persons, a slight increase from the 1995 (5.5 persons) and national average of five persons.

Tabuk (provincial capital) comprised almost one half of the population in Kalinga

Among the eight municipalities in Kalinga, the municipality of Tabuk (Capital), which comprised 45.19 percent of the total provincial population, was the largest in terms of population size. This was followed by the municipality of Pinukpuk (15.02 percent), Tinglayan (8.14 percent), Rizal (Liwan) (7.84 percent), and Balbalan (6.86 percent). The other three municipalities had less than 6 percent share each (Tanudan, 5.90 percent; Lubuagan, 5.67 percent; and Pasil, 5.38 percent) to the provincial population.

Kalinga ranked fourth in CAR in terms of population size

Among the six provinces, Abra, Apayao, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, and one highly urbanized city (Baguio City) in CAR, Kalinga ranked fourth in terms of population size, contributing 12.7 percent to the 1.4 million population of the region. At the national level, Kalinga shared 0.23 percent to the Philippine population of 76.5 million as recorded in the Census 2000.

Sex ratio registered at 105.7 in 2000

Male population outnumbered their female counterparts with a sex ratio of 105.7 males for every 100 females. There were more males than females in the age bracket 0 to 59 years. On the contrary, there were more females than males in the age group 60 years and over.

Kalinga had a median age of 20 years

In 2000, Kalinga had a median age of 20 years, higher than the 1995 figure (19 years). This meant that half of the population was below 20 years old.

In 2000, overall dependency ratio was 78

The 0 to 14 age group made up 40.17 percent of the population while those aged 65 years and above comprised 3.64 percent. Thus, the economically active population aged 15 to 64 years, was 56.19 percent of the total population in Kalinga. The overall dependency ratio in 2000 was 78. This meant that for every 100 persons aged 15 to 64 years, there were about 78 dependents (72 persons aged 0 to 14 years - young dependents; and 6 persons aged 65 years and over - old dependents). The 2000 ratio was lower than the 79.17 ratio reported in 1995.

Degree holders were predominantly females

Of the total household population five years old and over, almost half (45.79 percent) had attended or completed elementary education; 23 percent, high school; 11.19 percent, college education; and almost four percent were academic degree holders. More than half of those who had attended or finished elementary education (54.03 percent) were males. On the other hand, those who had attended or finished college and with post baccalaureate courses were predominantly females.

Three out of five persons classified themselves as Kalingas

Majority (64.4 percent) of the household population in Kalinga classified themselves as Kalingas. About 24 percent considered themselves as Ilocanos, and 2.5 percent as Kankanais/Kankaneys/Kankanaeys. Other ethnic groups included Ibontoc (1.6 percent), Tagalog (1.3 percent), and Applai (1.0 percent).

More single persons than married persons in 2000

Less than half (48.3 percent) of 10 years old and over were single, while 42.4 percent were married. The remaining nine percent were either widowed, divorced/ separated, with other arrangements or with unknown marital status.

Almost all of the housing units were occupied

There were 30,113 housing units in Kalinga, of which 30,106 were occupied. This registered an increase of 23.77 percentage points from 1990 and recorded a ratio of 1.01 household per occupied housing unit or a ratio of 5.77 persons per occupied housing unit.

Majority of occupied housing units needed no repair/minor repair

Almost all (94.3 percent) of the occupied housing units were single houses. Almost seven out of 10 occupied housing units needed no repair/minor repair. More than one fourth were relatively new (built from 1996 to 2000). As to the construction materials used for housing units, less than three fourths (72.5 percent) of the occupied housing units had roof made of galvanized iron/aluminum as compared to only 50.7 percent in 1990. Moreover, occupied housing units with walls made of wood and bamboo/sawali/nipa were registered at 29 percent each.

KALINGA

Kalinga is one of the six provinces comprising the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR). It was created in 1995 by Republic Act No. 7878, authored by Congressman E.K. Balut, which divided the former province of Kalinga-Apayao into two independent and distinct provinces - the Province of Kalinga and the Province of Apayao.

Kalinga and Apayao are landlocked by the province of Cagayan on the north and east, by the province of Isabela also on the east, by the provinces of Abra and Ilocos Norte on the west, and by the province of Mountain Province on the south. Kalinga is surrounded by mountain peaks. It was divided into three geographically distinct areas centered around the Chico River: the mountainous western portion of the river's basin, the valley of the river and its tributaries, and the level plains between the river and Cagayan province.
