Nine Out Of Ten Antiqueños Were Hamtikanons (Results from the 2000 Census of Population and Housing, NSO)
Population growth rate was registered at 1.97
The province of Antique registered a total population of 472,822 persons in the year 2000, from 431,713 in 1995. This figure gave the province an average annual growth rate of 1.97 percent, from 1.14 percent registered during the 1990 to 1995 period. Similarly, the number of households rose to 93,298, higher by 8,933 households from 1995. This gave an average household size of 5.07 persons, a slight decrease from the 1995 average of 5.11 persons.
San Jose, the provincial capital, was second to the biggest in terms of population size
Among the eighteen municipalities in the province, the municipality of Sibalom which comprised 10.57 percent of the total provincial population, was the largest in terms of population size. This was closely followed by San Jose, the provincial capital, with 10.21 percent. The municipalities of Hamtic (8.09 percent), Culasi (7.35 percent) and Patnongon (6.67 percent) followed next. The municipalities of Belison and Libertad had the least population with 2.46 percent and 2.74 percent, respectively.
Sex ratio was recorded at 102.32
Male population slightly outnumbered their female counterparts with a sex ratio of 102.32 males for every 100 females. There were more males than females in the age bracket 0 to 49 years while there were more females reported in the 50 and above age brackets.
Antique had a median age of 21 years
In 2000, Antique had a median age of 21 years, higher than that of 1995 (20 years). This meant that half of the population were aged 21 years and below.
Dependency ratio was 78
Economically active population aged 15 to 64 years comprised 56 percent of the total population, 37.94 percent for aged 0 to 14 years and 5.97 percent for 65 years and above. Thus, the overall dependency ratio was 78.30, lower than the 1995 ratio of 83.48. This meant that for every 100 economically active persons, there were 78 dependents, 68 persons of which were young dependents and 10 persons were old dependents.
More females pursued higher education
Among the household population aged five years old and over, 47.85 percent had attended/ completed elementary education; 25.06 percent, high school; and 4.97 percent, post secondary education; 3.72 percent, academic degree holders; 6.46 percent, college undergraduates; and less than one percent (0.45) with post-baccalaureate studies. There were more males than females among those who had attended or finished elementary (51.66 percent) and post-secondary courses (54.42 percent). On the other hand, there were more females who had attended/completed high school (50.03 percent), were college undergraduates (52.73 percent), were academic degree holders (63.97 percent), and attended/completed post baccalaureate courses (68.37 percent).
9 in 10 Antiqueños were Hamtikanons
In Antique, 94.5 percent of the household population classified themselves as Hamtikanons. The rest were either Cuyunun/Cuyunan (1.4 percent), Hiligaynon/Ilonggo (1.0 percent), Cebuano (0.9 percent) or belonged to other ethnic groups (2.0 percent).
Proportion of married individuals down by 3.06 percentage points
Of the total population aged 10 years and over, married persons comprised 42.77 percent, lower by 3.06 percentage points than the 1995 figure (45.83). The proportions of single persons, widowed and with other arrangements were 46.83 percent, 5.54 percent and 3.47 percent, respectively. Separated/divorced persons constituted 0.66 percent, higher than the 0.46 percent recorded in 1995.
Majority of the housing units were single houses
Census 2000 recorded a total of 92,436 housing units, of which 92,394 were occupied by 93,298 households. These figures recorded a 99.95 percent occupancy rate, higher by 3.46 percentage points than the 1990 figure (96.49). Of the occupied housing units in Antique, 97.98 percent were single houses, 0.41 percent were duplex while 0.24 percent were multi-residential.
Majority (60.91 percent) of the occupied housing units did not need repair or if needed one with minor repair only. This was lower by 6.22 percentage points from the 1990 figure (67.13 percent). Two out of five occupied housing units were relatively new, built from1996 to 2000.
The proportion of roof made of galvanized iron/aluminum doubled after 10 years
In Antique, the proportion of housing units with roof made of galvanized iron/aluminum doubled, from 23.98 percent recorded in 1990 to 49.32 percent in 2000. On the other hand, the proportion of roof made of cogon/nipa/anahaw declined from 75.96 percent in 1990 to 44.47 percent in 2000. The use of concrete/brick/stone as construction material of the outer walls increased by 11.86 percentage points, from 7.02 percent in 1990 to 18.88 percent in 2000.

ANTIQUE
Antique is a long stretch land occupying the western coast of Panay Island. The province of Aklan bounds it on the north and northeast, Capiz and Iloilo on the east, by Cuyo Pass on the west and by Panay Gulf on the south.
Antique has rich mineral resources and is known for its loom-woven fabrics (piña, jusi, "patadyong"), pottery and handicrafts. Tourist attractions include Sta. Rita Church in Sibalom with a reclining statue of the patron saint from Italy; Pula Waterfalls in San Remigio; and beaches like Camp Autajay, the island of Semirara, Nogas, and Hurao-hurao, all offering scenic panorama and fine beaches.

TECHNICAL NOTES
Average Household Size – average number of people who live in the household
Growth Rate – the rate at which the population is increasing (or decreasing) in a given year due to natural increase and net migration, expressed as a percentage of the base population
Median Age – the age at which exactly half of the population is young and half is old
Sex Ratio – the ratio of males to females in a given population expressed as the number of males per 100 females
Age-Dependency Ratio – the ratio of persons in the "dependent" ages (under 15 years and over 64 years) to those in the "economically productive" ages (15 to 64 years old) in the population
Household – a social unit consisting of a person or a group of persons who sleep in the same housing unit and have common arrangements in the preparation and consumption of food
The 2000 Census of Population and Housing (Census 2000) was undertaken by the National Statistics Office (NSO) in May 2000, as mandated by Commonwealth Act No. 591, Batas Pambansa Blg. 72 and Executive Order No. 121. It was the 11th census of population and 5th census of housing undertaken in this country since the first census in 1903. It was designed to take an inventory of the total population and housing units all over the Philippines and to collect information about their characteristics. Census day for the Census 2000 was May 1, 2000 (12:01 a.m.). Enumeration started on May 1, 2000 and lasted for about 30 days.
