OVER ONE AND A HALF MILLION PERSONS IN ILOILO (Results from the 2000 Census of Population and Housing, NSO)
Annual Growth rate up to 2.10 percent
The province of Iloilo registered a total population of 1.6 million persons in the year 2000, up from 1.4 million persons in 1995. This figure gave an average annual population growth rate of 2.10 percent from 1995 to 2000, an increase of 1.05 percentage points from the average rate in the 1990 to 1995 period. The number of households in 2000 was 298,593, an increase of 34,711 households over the 1995 figure. This gave an average household size of 5.2 persons, a slight decrease from the average in 1995 (5.3 persons) and higher than the national average of five persons.
City of Passi had the largest population in Iloilo
Among the 42 municipalities and one city in Iloilo (excluding Iloilo City), the City of Passi, which comprised 4.46 percent of the total provincial population, was the largest in terms of population size. Next were Oton (4.2 percent), Pototan (3.9 percent), Miagao (3.7 percent), and Dumangas (3.6 percent). The provincial capital, Iloilo City which had a population of 366,391 persons was excluded in the count of the province, being a highly urbanized city (a separate Press Release for Iloilo City was prepared).
Iloilo ranked second in Region VI
Among the six provinces (Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, Negros Occidental), and two highly urbanized cities (Iloilo City and Bacolod City) in Western Visayas, Iloilo ranked second in terms of population size, next to Negros Occidental. This province contributed 25.1 percent to the 6.2 million population of the region. At the national level, Iloilo shared 2.1 percent to the Philippine population of 76.5 million as recorded in the 2000 Census of Population and Housing (Census 2000).
Median age was 22 years
Iloilo had a median age of 22 years. This means that in 2000 half of the population were below 22 years old. The median age in 1995 was 21 years.
Male population outnumbered their female counterparts with a sex ratio of 102 males for every 100 females. There were more males than females in the age bracket 0 to 49 years. On the other hand, there were more females than males in the age group 50 years and over.
The overall dependency ratio in 2000 was 70
In 2000, the 0 to 14 age group made up about 35 percent of the total population while the population aged 65 years and above comprised 5.9 percent. The economically active population aged 15 to 64 thus, made up 59 percent of the total population in Iloilo.
The overall dependency ratio in 2000 was 70. This means that for every 100 persons aged 15 to 64 years, there were about 70 dependents (60 persons aged 0 to 14 years – young dependents; and ten persons aged 65 years old and over – old dependents). The 2000 ratio was lower by seven persons than the ratio reported in 1995 (77).
More female than male academic degree holders
Of the total household population five years old and over, 43.5 percent had attended or completed elementary education; 27.7 percent, high school; 9.71 percent, college; and four percent, academic degree holders. There were more females in almost all levels of education except in post secondary and pre-school levels. Among the academic degree holders, there was only one male for every two females.
Seven out of ten residents were Hiligaynons/Ilonggos
Majority (72 percent) of the household population in Iloilo classified themselves as Hiligaynon/Ilonggo. About 14.8 percent considered themselves as Karay-a and 11.3 percent as Kiniray-a. Other ethnic groups included Kankanai/Kankaney/Kankanaey (0.19 percent) and Cebuano (0.18 percent).
Almost half were still single in 2000
Almost half (48.7 percent) of those who were 10 years old and over were single, while 43 percent were married. The remaining eight percent were either widowed, divorced/separated, in other marital arrangements or with unknown marital status.
Occupancy rate was almost 100 percent
There were 295,503 housing units in Iloilo, of which 295,431 were occupied, or 99.98 occupancy rate. This registered a ratio of 1.01 household per occupied housing units or a ratio of 5.27 persons per occupied housing units. Majority of the occupied housing units were single houses (97.85 percent). Duplex and multi-unit residential houses accounted for only 0.50 percent and 0.13 percent, respectively.

ILOILO
Iloilo is the largest province in Panay. The province got its name from the word "Irong-Irong" which came from the word "Ilong-ilong" or "noselike" which describes the shape of the land cutting to rivers to form the angle of a nose. It is bounded on the north by the province of Capiz, on the east by Visayan Sea and Guimaras Strait, on the west by the province of Antique, and on the south by Panay Gulf and Iloilo Strait. It is said that ten Bornean Datus who purchased Panay in 1212, from Negrito Chief Marikudo for a gold "salakot" and necklace are said to have landed near Siwaragan River, which is now known as San Joaquin, Iloilo. In 1700 when the Spaniards built Fort San Pedro in the village of Irong-Irong, they shortened it's name to Iloilo, which later became the name of the city and the province. The province of Iloilo was created under Act No. 2711 on March 10, 1917.

TECHNICAL NOTES
Average Household Size – average number of people who live in the household
Growth Rate – the rate at which the population is increasing (or decreasing) in a given year due to natural increase and net migration, expressed as a percentage of the base population
Median Age – the age at which exactly half of the population is young and half is old
Sex Ratio – the ratio of males to females in a given population expressed as the number of males per 100 females
Age-Dependency Ratio – the ratio of persons in the "dependent" ages (under 15 years and over 64 years) to those in the "economically productive" ages (15 to 64 years old) in the population
Household – a social unit consisting of a person or a group of persons who sleep in the same housing unit and have common arrangements in the preparation and consumption of food
The 2000 Census of Population and Housing (Census 2000) was undertaken by the National Statistics Office (NSO) in May 2000, as mandated by Commonwealth Act No. 591, Batas Pambansa Blg. 72 and Executive Order No. 121. It was the 11th census of population and 5th census of housing undertaken in this country since the first census in 1903. It was designed to take an inventory of the total population and housing units all over the Philippines and to collect information about their characteristics. Census day for the Census 2000 was May 1, 2000 (12:01 a.m.). Enumeration started on May 1, 2000 and lasted for about 30 days.
The population count of Iloilo excludes the count of Iloilo City, being a highly urbanized city. A separate Press Release was prepared for each highly urbanized city. As defined in the 1991 Local Government Code, a city is considered highly urbanized if it has an annual income of not lower than fifty million pesos based on 1991 constant prices, as certified by the city treasurer and its population is at least two hundred thousand (200,000) inhabitants, as certified by NSO.
