(Results from the 2000 Census of Population and Housing, NSO)

The population of Davao del Sur, as of May 1, 2000, was 758,801 persons. This was up by 81,732 persons as compared to 677,069 persons in the 1995 Census of Population.

The highest annual population growth rate recorded for Davao del Sur since 1903 was during the intercensal period 1948 to 1960 at an annual population growth rate of 9.83 percent. The lowest was during the period 1903 to 1918 at 0.91 percent. The annual population growth rate for the period 1995 to 2000 was 2.47 percent. If the current growth rate continues, the population of Davao del Sur was expected to double in 28 years.

In 2000, the number of households was 157,054 with an average household size of 4.83 persons, slightly lower than the national average of five persons.

Davao del Sur, the second biggest province in Southern Mindanao in terms of population

In terms of population, Davao del Sur ranked second, next to Davao City, among the six provinces (Compostela Valley, Davao, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Sarangani and South Cotabato) and two highly urbanized cities (Davao City and General Santos City) contributing 14.62 percent to the 5.2 million population of the region. At the national level, the province shared 0.99 percent to the total population of 76.5 million as recorded in the 2000 Census of Population and Housing.

Digos, the provincial capital, was the most populated

Of the 15 municipalities comprising Davao del Sur, Digos, the provincial capital, was the biggest in terms of population. This registered a population of 125,171 persons or 16.50 percent of the total provincial population. It was followed by Malita (13.18 percent) and Sta. Cruz (8.87 percent). Padada and Sarangani had the smallest population with 3.18 percent and 2.42 percent of the total population, respectively.

Of the total occupied housing units, 37.07 percent had roof made up of cogon/nipa/anahaw and walls made of bamboo/sawali/cogon/nipa.

DAVAO DEL SUR

The name "Davao del Sur" was derived from the Bagobo word "Daba-daba" which means justice and the datus' fairness to his people.

Davao del Sur is bounded on the north by the province of Davao, on the west by the provinces of Catobato, Sultan Kudarat, South Cotabato and Sarangani, on the east by Davao Gulf and on the south by Mindanao Sea. A range of mountains runs along the western boundary, which makes Davao del Sur largely mountainous. Rain falls evenly throughout the year.

The province is strategically placed to provide resources to meet the needs of the rapidly industrializing and urbanizing centers.

Davao del Sur was created into a province on May 8, 1967 under RA No. 4867.

Median Age – the age at which exactly half of the population is young and half is old

Sex Ratio – the ratio of males to females in a given population expressed as the number of males per 100 females

Age-Dependency Ratio – the ratio of persons in the "dependent" ages (under 15 years and over 64 years) to those in the "economically productive" ages (15 to 64 years old) in the population

The 2000 Census of Population and Housing (Census 2000) was undertaken by the National Statistics Office (NSO) in May 2000, as mandated by Commonwealth Act No.591, Batas Pambansa Blg. 72 and Executive Order No. 121. It was the 11th census of population and 5th census of housing undertaken in this country since the first census in 1903. It was designed to take an inventory of the total population and housing units all over the Philippines and to collect information about their characteristics. Census day for the Census 2000 was May 1, 2000 (12:01 a.m.). Enumeration started on May 1, 2000 and lasted for about 30 days.

The population count of Davao del Sur excludes the count of Davao City, being a highly urbanized city. A separate Press Release was prepared for each highly urbanized city. As defined in the 1991 Local Government Code, a city is considered highly urbanized if it has an annual income of not lower than fifty million pesos based on 1991 constant prices, as certified by the city treasurer; and its population is at least two hundred thousand (200,000) inhabitants, as certified by NSO.
