The National Statistics Office (NSO) has started its series of trainings in preparation for the conduct of the 2007 Census of Population (POPCEN 2007). The Census, which will start on August 1, aims to take an inventory of the total population of the country and collect information on demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the population, which are vital in the formulation and implementation of national development plans.
Adopting a pyramidal structure, the program which consists of four levels of training was designed for about 37,000 enumerators, over 7,000 team supervisors, and almost 2,000 census area supervisors who will augment the NSO field staff in the conduct of POPCEN 2007.
The First Level or Task Force Training concluded last month with selected Central Office personnel, Regional Directors, selected Provincial Statistics Officers, and Regional statisticians as participants. Also completed was the Second Level Training at Regional Offices which was attended by Provincial Statistics Officers, provincial statisticians, and selected regional and provincial staff.
To date, the NSO is conducting the Third Level Training in various Provincial Training Centers. Participants include District Statistics Officers, Statistical Coordinating Officers, Census Area Supervisors, and other provincial staff.
Meanwhile, the fourth and last level of training is set on the last week of July in selected municipal training centers. Among the expected attendees are team supervisors, enumerators and reserved enumerators.
All levels of training discuss the contents of the Enumerators Manual, giving emphasis to the objectives and concepts of POPCEN 2007, form contents, field enumeration procedures, and how to accomplish the questionnaires and administrative forms.
