Building Permit Applications
Rose to 27,714
- Building permit applications during the second quarter of 1997 increased
by 35 percent reaching to 27,714 from 20,573 received during the same period
in 1996.
- Applications for all types of building constructions increased. Bulk
of building permits was issued for the construction of residential buildings
numbering 19,710 or an increase of 39 percent from 14,227. Non-residential
building constructions rose by 21 percent to 2,991 from 2,472. Those for
additions, alterations/repairs grew by 29 percent to 5,013 from 3,874.
Fig. 1. shows the distribution of building permit application by type during
the first quarter of 1996 & 1997.
- Among provinces, Cavite got the highest building permit applications
of 4,383 accounting for 16 percent of the total. Bulacan ranked second
with 1,379 applications or 5 percent.

Value of Construction
Was Estimated at P26.64 Billion
- Total value of building construction was estimated at P26.64 billion
or an increase of 19 percent from P22.29 billion.
- Value of residential building construction increased by 14 percent
to P8.08 billion from P7.12 billion while value of non-residential building
construction rose by 17 percent to P15.73 billion from P13.50 billion.
Those for additions, alterations/repairs jumped by 69 percent to P2.83
billion from P1.67 billion. Fig 2. shows a comparison of the value of constructions
by type for the second quarter, 1996 & 1997.

Single-Type Houses Accounted for
the Largest Applications Among Residential Buildings
- Applications for single-type houses among residential buildings accounted
for 76 percent, numbering 15,078 and valued at P6.27 billion. Apartment/Accessoria
placed second with 3,964 applications and valued at P1.43 billion, while
duplex type house placed third with 649 applications and valued at P336.5
million. Fig. 3 presents the number and value of residential building construction
by type during the second quarter of 1997.
- Outside Metropolitan Manila Area, Cavite topped all provinces with
respect to applications for single-type houses, numbering to 2,586 and
valued at P636.3 million. Davao del Sur ranked second with 929 applications
and valued at P237.7 million.

Commercial Building Accounted
for the Largest Applications Among Non-Residential Buildings
- For non-residential building constructions, applications for commercial
buildings comprised 51 percent of the total numbering 1,532 and valued
P10.04 billion. Followed by industrial building with 538 applications and
valued at P2.34 billion. Institutional building ranked third with 400 applications
and valued at P1.39 billion. Fig 4. presents the number and value of non-residential
building construction by type during the second quarter of 1997.
- Outside Metropolitan Manila Area, Cebu received the largest number
of applications for non-residential building, numbering 177 and valued
at P1.32 billion. Davao del Sur followed with 152 applications and valued
at P839.9 million.
