The total population of Western Mindanao (Region IX)
as of September 1, 1995 is
2,794,659
      Basilan                         295,565     Zamboanga del Sur    1,728,397
      Zamboanga del Norte    770,697             
  The population of Region IX grew at the rate of 2.42 percent annually in the first half of the nineties. This is 0.19 percentage point higher than the annual geometric census growth rate during the eighties (2.23 percent)
Among the three provinces in Region IX,
             Zamboanga del Sur registered the largest population
at 1,728,397 persons, and
             Basilan, the smallest at 295,565 persons.
Basilan was the fastest growing province in the region with an annual
                  growth rate of 4.12 percent,
while Zamboanga del Sur was the slowest at 2.13 percent.
