GENERAL RETAIL PRICE
INDEX IN THE NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION

Month-on-Month
The
month-on-month growth rate of the General Retail Price Index (GRPI) in the National
Capital Region (NCR) went up by 0.6 percentage point to 2.0 percent in April from 1.4
percent in March. Higher monthly price increments were registered in the food index at 2.2
percent from 1.4 percent; mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials index at 4.6
percent from 2.0 percent; chemicals, including animal and vegetable oils and fats index,
0.6 percent from 0.4 percent; and machinery and transport equipment index, 0.5 percent
from -0.3 percent. Price gain in crude materials, inedible except fuels index remained at
0.6 percent while no price movement was seen in miscellaneous manufactured articles index.
The rest of the commodity groups recorded slower monthly positive growth rates.
Upward price
adjustments were noted in selected food items such as chicken, beef, pork, dairy products,
rice, bakery products, vegetables, sugar, coffee and cooking oil. Likewise, price hikes
were also observed in gasoline, kerosene, paints and related compounds, medicines,
electrical wires and wiring devices and selected electrical appliances.
Year-on-Year
On an annual
basis, the growth rate of the GRPI in NCR further picked up to 9.1 percent in April from
7.3 percent in March. Annual growth rates of all the commodity groups were higher except
for miscellaneous manufactured articles index whose annual growth rate remained at 5.7
percent. Annual growth rate for the food index was higher at 9.4 percent in April from 7.2
percent in March; beverages and tobacco index, 5.9 percent from 5.1 percent; crude
materials, inedible except fuels index, 7.3 percent from 6.8 percent; mineral fuels,
lubricants and related materials index, 25.0 percent from 23.0 percent; chemicals,
including animal and vegetable oils and fats index, 2.4 percent from 1.9 percent;
manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials index, 4.6 percent from 3.6 percent;
and machinery and transport equipment index, 1.4 percent from 1.0 percent.
