LIVE BIRTHS IN THE PHILIPPINES 2000
Explanatory Notes
This special release presents data on births which occurred in 2000 and were registered in January 2000 to December 2001. Birth statistics were obtained from the Certificates of Live Birth (Municipal Form 102), which were transmitted by the City/Municipal Civil Registrars to the Office of the Civil Registrar General for machine processing and archiving. Data excludes those that were not registered and/or those registered after December 2001.
The number of live births increased by 8.3 percent in ten years
The total number of live births reported in 2000 was 1,766,440 (Table 1). This reflects a 9.5-percent increase from the 1,613,337 live birth occurrences in 1999 and 8.3-percent increase from the 1,631,069 live birth occurrences in 1990.
More males (918,243 or 52.0 percent ) than females (848,197 or 48.0 percent) were born during the year resulting to a sex ratio of 108.3.
The National Capital Region (NCR), having the second largest population size, reported the highest proportion of live births with 303,631 or 17.2 percent of the total. Southern Tagalog, the most populated region followed next with 299,872 or 17.0 percent. Central Luzon, meanwhile reported a total of 200,361 (11.4 percent) live births.
The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) reported the lowest birth occurrences with only 9,327 or 0.5 percent of the total.
Crude birth rates (CBR) by region ranged from 3.9 to 30.6
Approximately 23 live births per 1,000 population had occurred in 2000. Males had a slightly higher CBR (23.8) than females (22.3)
The crude birth rates by region ranged from 3.9 for ARMM to 30.6 for NCR.
Seven regions reflected crude birth rates higher than the national figure of 23.1 (See Figure 1).
About 3 babies were born every minute
The daily average of birth occurrence was 4,826. This means an addition of three babies to the population every minute.
October recorded the highest number of births with 161,055, while September recorded the highest daily average of 5,282. Meanwhile, February recorded the lowest daily average with only 4,427.
Daily index of more than 100 (see Figure 2) indicates a daily average higher than the national figure. These were reflected in the months of May, September and all months during the last quarter of 2000.
About 65.3 percent of births were medically attended
The number of birth deliveries attended by physician, nurses, and licensed midwives was 1,153,836 or 65.3 percent of the total. On the other hand, 610,925 or 34.6 percent were delivered by "hilots" or unlicensed midwives and others who have no medical license and/or proper medical training.
The regions with more than 80 percent of its total births delivered by medical attendants were NCR (89.4 percent) and Central Luzon (84.6 percent).
On the other hand, the regions with very low medical attendance, that is, less than 40 percent of its region's total births were Caraga (36.1 percent), ARMM (38.6 percent) and Bicol (39.0 percent).
The median age of mothers was 27.7 years
The median age of mothers who gave birth during the reference year was 27.7 years. The bulk of births were born to mothers aged 20-34 years with 1,346,167 or 76.2 percent of the total.
The number of births born to teenage mothers was 126,025 or 7.1 percent of the total. On the other hand, the number of births born to mothers at menopausal age of 45 years and over was 10,127 or 0.6 percent.
