What is the PSQ?
The Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) is an annual contest in statistics among freshmen
college students. It was launched in 1992 by the National Statistics Office (NSO), Philippine Statistical
Association (PSA) in cooperation with the Department of Education, Culture and Sports (DECS), the
Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Statistical Research and Training Center (SRTC). In
1994, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) launched the PSQ.
The main objectives of PSQ are to instill the value of statistics among students and
to win public cooperation in all government statistical activities such as censuses and surveys, and
eventually generate quality data for national development planning. The PSQ is also designed to measure
the effectiveness of the current statistics curriculum in high school and determine possible areas for
improvement so that college entrants inclined in the sciences will develop more interest in statistical
courses.
How was the PSQ started?
The PSQ is actually the brainchild of NSO Administrator Tomas P. Africa. The PSA is
a nonstock, nonprofit organization of professional statisticians from government and nongovernment
agencies including the academe, whose main objectives are to project its role as a vital partner in
nation building as well as make statistics at par with other knowledge areas.
The first PSQ was held on September 25, 1992 at the Philippine Social Science Center
Auditorium in Commonwealth Avenue, Diliman, Quezon City as one of the highlights of the 40th anniversary
celebration of the PSA. It was experimental and limited only to students from the National Capital Region
(NCR) due to constraint in funds.
In the 1992 PSQ, fourteen finalists from different schools in the NCR vied for the
championship. The winners were awarded modest prizes which may not be as attractive as the prizes at
stake in other national contests. But the honors that went with it were priceless indicators of their
capabilities for greater academic feats.
From then on, the PSQ has become one of the many important undertakings of the PSA
being held annually as it continuously attracts various sponsors which include the Philippine Amusement
and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), Social Security System (SSS), Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP),
Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP), Philippine Commercial and Industrial Bank (PCIB), Land Bank
of the Philippines (LBP), APO Production Unit, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), Metrobank
Foundation, University of the Philippines (UP), National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB), and the
Bureau of Labor and Employment Statistics.
With better funding support, the PSQ finally went national in 1993 as originally
intended. Eliminations were held in the regions to determine the representatives to the national
competition held in the regions to determine the representatives to the national competition held in
Metro Manila. Representations were largely based on the number of colleges and universities in the
respective regional areas. However, from 1995 to 1999, each of the fifteen regions had the regional champion as
the lone representative to the final round. Starting year 2000, the regional champions (including Caraga) will vie for the national finals.
