What is the PSQ?

The Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) is an annual contest designed to test first-year college students’ knowledge of statistics.

The Philippine Statistical Association (PSA) and the National Statistics Office (NSO) have conducted the annual PSQ since 1992. The 2005 PSQ, the fourteenth in the series, will be conducted on a nationwide basis involving students enrolled in colleges and universities in the 17 regions of the country.

What are the objectives of the PSQ?

The PSQ has the following objectives:

  1. To assess the competency and skills of students in statistics as acquired from the secondary education curriculum;

  2. To promote, enhance, and instill awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of science, statistics in particular, among the studentry; and

  3. To generate public awareness on the important uses of statistics in all development-planning activities and win overall support for all      government statistical activities.

What is the significance of the PSQ?

PSQ is a laudable effort that strongly contributes to the building of scientific and technological manpower by helping identify and nurture talents especially in the field of statistics. Results of the contest can show indications of the effectiveness of the statistics component of mathematics as a subject of the secondary curriculum.

Who may join the PSQ?

The PSQ is open to all freshmen who are enrolled in the second semester for SY 2005-2006 in any recognized academic institution. For purposes of the PSQ, a freshman student refers to one who has graduated in the previous school year from high school. Hence, freshman students who have enrolled for more than two semesters in another course or school, although not necessarily completing these, are disqualified to join the PSQ. Students who had been contestants of previous PSQs, either in regional eliminations or in national finals, are also disqualified.

Contestants must be officially endorsed by an official of the academic institution. Each participant is entitled to one coach from the same school where he/she is enrolled.

Interested contestants and coaches should register with the PSQ Regional Steering Committee (RSC) through the NSO Regional Office for the Regional elimination. The number of contestants depends on the recommendation of the PSQ RSC but not to exceed three contestants per school.

Relatives within the third degree of consanguinity of members of the various working committees of the 2005 PSQ and of the PSA Board of Directors are not eligible to participate in the contest.
