Objectives

The Philippine Statistical Association (PSA) organized the PSQ with the following objectives:

  1. Assess the competency and skills of students in statistics as acquired from the secondary education curriculum;
  2. Promote, enhance, and instill awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of science, statistics in particular, among studentry; and
  3. Generate public awareness on the important uses of statistics in all development-planning activities and win overall support for all government statistical activities.
Significance of the PSQ

To officials of organizing agencies, PSQ is a laudable effort that strongly contributes to the building of scientific and technological manpower by helping identify and nurture talents especially in the field of statistics. Results of the contest may be an indication of the effectiveness of the statistics component of mathematics as a subject of the secondary curriculum.

Who May Join/Participants

The PSQ is open to all students who are enrolled in or just completed their first semester in any recognized academic institution. Each participant is entitled to one coach from the same school where the student is enrolled.

Contestants must be officially endorsed by an official of the academic institution. For the regional elimination, the number of contestants depends on the recommendation of the regional steering committee but not to exceed three contestants per school.

Relatives within the third degree of consanguinity of members of the various working committees of the 1999 PSQ and of the 1998 PSA Board of Directors are not eligible to participate in the contest.

Prizes at Stake

All participants to the PSQ National Finals shall be awarded with a PSQ medal as Regional Champion before the contest proper.

The top five winners in the PSQ national finals shall be given a PSQ trophy and a certificate of recognition while their coaches, a certificate of recognition. In addition, they will receive the following cash prizes:

The college or university where the top five winners are enrolled as well as the high school where they graduated shall also be awarded a Certificate of Recognition.
Time and Place

The 1999 PSQ regional elimination will be held in the regional centers on November 17 or November 19, 1999* while the national finals will be held on December 2, 1999* at the William Shaw Theater of the De La Salle University in Manila.

Be a PSQ Partner

In order to conduct the competition successfully, the PSQ is looking for partners who can provide any of the following:

  • financial assistance for the prizes and incidental expenses of the PSQ
  • streamers, posters, brochures and other dissemination materials about PSQ.
  • press releases or live coverage of the contest
  • venue for the conduct of the contest
