CONVENTION ON THE RIGHTS OF CHILDREN

 July 26, 1990 - The Philippines ratified the Convention of the Rights of Children (CRC)

An instrument/agreement w/c spells out the range of rights that children everywhere are entitled to.

 It sets basic standards for children’s well-being at different stages of their development.

 YChildren have their own rights and are supposed to be active in exercising them in accordance with their growth and evolving capacities

 Y Its principles is based on Non-discrimination

 YThe need for more flexible and innovative approaches

 YThe development of Popular awareness of “ the principles and provision of the convention…. By adults and children alike”

 Obligation of the State Parties is to make the convention widely known to adults and most specially children.

Articles of the CRC under the 4 categories

On Survival:

ü Article 6 - right to life

ü Article 24- right to health & health care

ü Article 27- right to adequate standard of living

On Development:

ü Article 28 - right to education

ü Article 29 - develop the child’s physical and mental abilities

ü Article 32 - protection from performing work that may interfere w/ his/her education

On Protection:

ü Article 7 - right to a name & nationality

ü Article 8 - right to preserve his or her identity

ü Article 9 - right to family care

ü Article 10 - right to leave/enter country to be reunited with family

ü  Article 19 - from violence, abuse or neglect

üArticle 20 - right to special protection & assistance if without family

ü Article 21 - adoption to be carried out only if it is to the best interest of the child

ü Article 22 - if refugee or asylum seeker

ü Article 23 - if disabled

ü Article 25 - right to periodic review if placed under care, protection or treatment
