TOP CONTRIBUTORS TO MERCHANDISE EXPORTS GROWTH IN THE PHILIPPINES, MAY 2000 AND MAY 1999
(Preliminary)

Despite posting a 6.6 percent drop in receipts, Electronics and Components remained as the top export for May 2000 with an aggregate value placed at $1.417 billion. About 58.7 percent ($832 million) of its total receipts came from exports of Semi-conductors, mainly comprised of Semi-conductor Devices manufactured from materials on consignment basis which brought in $780.67 million, down 22.6 percent from $1.009 billion last year. For Micro-circuits exports valued at $304.36 million, the top earner was the Digital Monolithic Integrated Units group which comprised 12.6 percent of the aggregate revenue for Electronics and Components. Receipts from Other Electronics and Components consisting mainly of Finished electrical and electronic machinery and parts, manufactured from materials on consignment basis, accounted for 19.8 percent and grew by 29.9 percent to $280.36 million from $215.82 million last year.

The second leading contributor to export growth in May 2000 was Input/Output Peripheral Units with receipts growing by 72.1 percent to $283.93 million from $164.94 million last year.

The third top contributor to export growth was Articles of Apparel and Clothing Accessories valued at $199.92 million which, however, decreased by 4.4 percent from $209.07 million a year ago. Exports of Articles of Apparel and Clothing Accessories not manufactured from materials on consignment basis, amounting to $112.64 million, accounted for 56.3 percent of the total receipts. Men's wear manufactured from materials on consignment basis valued at $31.70 million accounted for 15.9 percent while Women's wear worth $28.32 million accounted for 14.2 percent. Children's and infant's wear followed with $16.74 million or 8.4 percent of the total.

Exports of Petroleum Products valued at $33.21 million went up by 185.8 percent from $11.62 million a year earlier. The steep climb was largely due to the increase in sales of gas oil and carbon black feedstock oil which increased by 1,830.6 percent and 1,069.1 percent, respectively.

SHARE OF US MARKET FOR ELECTRONICS DOWN TO 23.4 PERCENT

Exports of Electronics and Components to the United States amounted to $332.11 million which was 24.0 percent lower than $437.27 million last year. The share of United States fell to 23.4 percent from 28.8 percent. Taiwan’s share rose to 11.4 percent from 8.1 percent last year as earnings grew by 30.5 percent to $161.16 million from $123.50 million. Netherlands and Singapore followed with shipments valued at $160.91 million and $156.54 million, respectively. Other large markets for Electronics and Components were Japan (8.1 percent), Malaysia (6.9 percent), and Hongkong (6.2 percent).

USA, JAPAN STILL TOP MARKETS OF INPUT/OUTPUT/PERIPHERAL UNITS

The United States cornered 28.4 percent of the total exports of Input/Output/Peripheral Units for May 2000 with a value of $80.51 million which increased by 90.6 percent from $42.24 million in1999. Receipts from Japan went up by 50.5 percent to $76.67 million with a percentage share of 27.0 percent. Sales to Taiwan accounted for 11.6 percent and went up by 202.6 percent to $32.87 million. Other large markets were the UK of Great Britain ($26.15 million), Netherlands ($21.71 million), and Germany ($14.12 million). While exports of input/output/peripheral units to Korea comprised only 2.9 percent of total, it grew by 432.1 percent from $1.53 million last year to $8.14 million this year.

SHIPMENTS OF GARMENTS TO US REACH $153.62 MILLION

The bulk of exports of Articles of Apparel and Clothing Accessories went to the United States with 76.8 percent of the total export value amounting to $153.62 million although this was 5.8 percent lower than $163.11 million last year. Japan followed with a 3.7 percent share while at third was the United Kingdom of Great Britain with a 3.2 percent share.

EXPORT OF PETROLEUM PRODUCTS UP BY 4,915.0 PERCENT

The People’s Republic of China (PROC) cornered 44.2 percent of the exports of Petroleum Products. Valued at $14.67 million, sales to the PROC grew by 4,915.0 percent from only $292.6 thousand in May 1999. Singapore ranked second with payments valued at $7.54 million which rose by 42,300.7 percent from only $17 thousand in May 1999. It had a share of 22.7 percent of the total exports of petroleum products. Thailand followed with a 13.1 percent share while Malaysia came in fourth with a 6.9 percent share. The earnings from Malaysia grew by 42,674 percent from only $5 thousand in May 1999 to $2.3 million.
