TOP CONTRIBUTORS TO MERCHANDISE EXPORTS GROWTH IN THE PHILIPPINES,
NOVEMBER 2000 AND NOVEMBER 1999

Posting a 2.0 percent annual increase in receipts, Electronics Components (EC) remained as the top export for November 2000, with an aggregate value placed at $1.904 billion. Comprising 45.7 percent of EC, exports of Semi-conductor Devices experienced a slowdown particularly with transistors with $8.97 million and semi-conductor devices manufactured from materials on consignment basis with $803.52 million which were lower than $13.07 million and $1.010 billion in November 1999, respectively. For Micro-circuits, with a 21.0 percent share to EC, reported sales amounted to $400.60 million. The top earner for this group was Other Monolithic Digital Integrated Circuits valued at $258.22 million with a 13.6 percent share to total EC sales, from $122.75 million in November 1999. Total receipts from Other electronics components consisted mainly of finished electrical and electronic machinery and parts manufactured from materials on consignment basis which accounted for 15.1 percent of total EC sales and grew by 23.3 percent to $288.01 million. Further, revenue for Input/Output/Peripheral Units valued at $303.17 million increased by 10.0 percent from $275.70 million a year ago.

With a value of $186.51 million which was 13.9 percent higher than $163.72 million a year ago, Articles of Apparel and Clothing Accessories (AACA) was the second top earner for the month. AACA not manufactured from materials on consignment basis accounted for 56.8 percent of the total AACA receipts with sales amounting to $106.03 million or a 30.8 percent increase from $81.06 million in November 1999. AACA manufactured from materials on consignment basis combined for 43.2 percent with men's wear valued at $27.43 million, accounting for 14.7 percent and women's wear worth $23.97 million, accounting for 12.8 percent. Children's and infant's wear followed with $17.44 million which was 9.4 percent of the total.

Exports of Woodcrafts and Furniture valued at $71.77 million went up by 44.1 percent from $49.82 million in November 1999. Receipts from Wood Manufactures, n.e.s with a 59.8 percent share of total woodcrafts and furniture rose by 185.1 percent to $42.90 million from $15.05 million a year back.

UNITED STATES EC EXPORTS DROP BY 1.3 PERCENT

Exports of Electronics Components to the United States amounted to $443.16 million which was a decrease of 1.3 percent from $449.16 million in November 1999. The United States share of total exports of Electronics Components was also down to 23.3 percent from 24.1 percent. On the other hand, exports to Japan grew by 59.4 percent to $293.15 million from $183.85 million last year as its share rose to 15.4 percent from 9.9 percent. Revenues from Singapore increased by 39.9 percent to $241.90 million from $172.86 million, while that from Netherlands increased by 13.8 percent to $190.98 million and those from Taiwan declined by 39.5 percent at $149.44 million.

SHIPMENTS OF GARMENT TO US REACH $136.51 MILLION

Aggregate receipts from the United States amounting to $136.59 million was 73.2 percent of the total export value of Articles of Apparel and Clothing Accessories; this was 17.7 percent higher than $116.09 million in 1999. UK Great Britain and N. Ireland followed with a 5.3 percent share while at third was Germany with 3.7 percent share.

JAPAN TOPS MARKET ON WOODCRAFTS AND FURNITURE

The Japan - market cornered 61.1 percent of the total export of Woodcrafts and furniture, with purchases valued at $43.85 million in November 2000 which was a 169.4 percent increase over $16.28 million the previous year. Total receipts from United States, which was the second top market, dropped by 15.4 percent to $18.77 million while its share likewise fell to 26.2 percent from 44.5 percent. Other markets were France ($993.48 million), Netherlands, ($967.67 million), and Saudi Arabia, ($836.07 million).
