TOP CONTRIBUTORS TO MERCHANDISE EXPORTS GROWTH IN THE PHILIPPINES, DECEMBER 2000 AND DECEMBER 1999 (Preliminary)
Electronics Components (EC) remained as the top export for December 2000, posting a 15.6 percent increase in receipts with an aggregate value placed at $2.070 billion. It contributed half of the annual increase in total export earnings from December 1999 to December 2000. In December 2000, about 55.7 percent of the EC earnings came from exports of semi-conductor devices, particularly semi-conductor devices manufactured from materials on consignment basis. The latter comprised 53.2 percent of EC or $1.101 billion, representing a 30.9 percent increase from $841.32 million a year ago. Micro-circuits, with a 19.8 percent share to EC, reported sales amounted to $409.12 million. The top earner for this group was other monolithic digital integrated circuits valued at $283.61 million which increased by 36.2 percent from $208.30 million last year. Decreases in export earnings for two items under EC were however noted. Total receipts from other electronics components consisting mainly of finished electrical and electronic machinery and parts, manufactured from materials on consignment basis, experienced a 10.9 percent dip to $231.91 million in December 2000 from $260.40 million last year. Revenue from Input/Output/Peripheral Units valued at $236.96 million also fell by 6.9 percent from $254.49 million a year ago.
Articles of Apparel and Clothing Accessories (AACA) was the second top earner with a value of $262.64 million or 19.3 percent higher than $220.23 million a year back. It was also the second top contributor to the annual growth in export earnings. AACA not manufactured from materials on consignment basis accounted for 58.6 percent of the total AACA receipts with sales amounting to $153.95 million or a 23.8 percent increase from $124.31 million last year. AACA manufactured from materials on consignment basis combined for 41.4 percent with Men's wear valued at $37.70 million accounting for 14.4 percent and Women's wear worth $36.54 million accounting for 13.9 percent. Children's and infant's wear followed with $24.27 million or 9.2 percent of the total.

EC EXPORTS TO US GREW BY 53.2 PERCENT
Exports of Electronics Components to the United States amounted to $660.93 million or an increase of 53.2 percent from $431.32 million last year. Its share of total exports of Electronics Components went up to 31.9 percent from 24.1 percent. Exports to Japan also grew by 42.1 percent to $272.13 million from $191.54 million last year as percentage share rose to 13.1 percent from 10.7 percent. Revenues from Singapore increased by 23.8 percent to $245.28 million from $198.05 million, while those from Netherlands rose by 12.5 percent to $217.33 million. However, EC exports to Taiwan declined by 9.4 percent to $166.33 million.

SHIPMENTS OF GARMENTS TO US REACH $204.80 MILLION
Aggregate receipts from the United States amounting to $204.80 million accounted for 78.0 percent of the total export value of Articles of Apparel and Clothing Accessories. This was 23.3 percent higher than $166.06 million in 1999. UK Great Britain and N. Ireland followed with a 3.6 percent share while at third was Japan with a 3.1 percent share. Other major markets for Articles of Apparel and Clothing Accessories with their shares were as follows: Germany (2.5 percent); Canada (2.2 percent); and, Netherlands (2.0 percent).
