The National Statistics Office (NSO) will be releasing LFS results, starting with the January 2007 round, using the latest population projections. These projections were calculated using data on population by age and sex from the 2000 Census of Population and Housing (CPH) as the base population. The 2000 CPH-based population projections will be adopted to generate the labor force and employment statistics. This is in compliance with the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) Resolution No.1 series of 2005 entitled "Adoption of the Methodology Used in Generating the 2000 Census of Population and Housing-Based National Population Projections." Previous LFS used the 1995 Population Census (POPCEN)-based projections for survey weights.
The NSO, in collaboration with an inter-agency technical working group on population projections, prepares new set of projections after every census undertaking. The population count by age and sex from this latest census is used as the base population. This population is projected based on assumptions with respect to the future paths of fertility, mortality and migration. Survey weights, on the other hand, are used to produce valid estimates of population parameters. These are attached to each sampling element as multipliers or expansion factors to data values to come up with estimates like totals and means.
The LFS is a nationwide survey designed to provide statistics on the size of the labor force, levels and trends of employment, unemployment and underemployment for the country as a whole, and for each of the administrative regions. It aims to provide quantitative framework for the preparation of plans and formulation of policies affecting the labor market. Its quarterly result is being targeted for release 45 days after enumeration of sample households.
The January 2007 LFS results shall be released in March 15.
For comparability of data, the results of the previous surveys shall be
re-tabulated using the latest projections. The backtracking shall start
with the 2006 LFS results.
All forthcoming household-based surveys, including the Family Income and Expenditure Survey (FIES) and the Surveyon Overseas Filipinos (SOF) shall likewise adopt the 2000 Census-based projections.
