A Review of the Agriculture Sector in Bicol Region

The number of farms in Bicol Region slightly increased by 1.9 percent, from 377.8 thousand in 1991 to 384.8 thousand in 2002. These farms covered an area of 892.0 thousand hectares, almost half (48.4 percent) of the region,s total land area. However, the total area of farms in the region decreased by 4.7 percent during the period mentioned. This is attributed to the decrease in the area of farms in almost all provinces in the region, especially Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur with 13.2 percent and 7.8 percent reduction, respectively. Likewise, the average farm size decreased from 2.5 hectares in 1991 to 2.3 hectares in 2002.

A Review of the Agriculture Sector in MIMAROPA

In 2002, MIMAROPA registered 221.0 thousand farms for agricultural use, covering 542.2 thousand hectares. The region's total agricultural land area comprised 19.7 percent of the region's total land area. Although the number of farms increased by 5.6 percent over the 209.2 thousand farms reported in 1991, the farm area decreased by 4.8 percent during this period. The increase in the region's number of farms and the decrease in its farm area contributed to the slight decrease of the region's average farm size of 2.4 hectares per farm, from 2.7 hectares in 1991.

A Review of the Agriculture Sector in CALABARZON

In 2002, CALABARZON registered 282.7 thousand farms for agricultural use, covering 588.5 thousand hectares. The region's total agricultural land area comprised 36.3 percent of the region's total land area. As the number of farms decreased by 11.6 percent and agricultural land area by 16.3 percent over the 1991 estimates, the average farm size likewise decreased from 2.20 hectares per farm in 1991 to 2.08 hectares per farm in 2002. Generally, the decrease in agricultural lands could be attributed to the conversion of these lands to residential or commercial lands to cope up with the increasing population in the region at an annual growth rate of 4.1 percent. The decrease was observed in all provinces in the region, both in terms of the area and number of farms.

A Review of the Agriculture Sector in Central Luzon

In 2002, Central Luzon registered 341.5 thousand farms for agriculture use, covering 552.1 thousand hectares. The region's total agricultural land area comprised 25.6 percent of the region's total land area. Compared with 1991, the number of farms decreased by 2.7 percent from 350.8 thousand farms. Likewise, the total area decreased by 12.7 percent from 632.5 thousand hectares. As a result, the average farm size slightly decreased from 1.8 hectares per farm in 1991 to 1.6 hectares per farm in 2002. Generally, the decrease in the number of agricultural farms could be attributed to the increasing population in the region at an annual growth rate of 3.2 percent. Agricultural lands could have been converted to residential or commercial lands to cope up with population growth especially in highly urbanized areas like Angeles City and Olongapo City.

Farms of Agricultural Operators in National Capital Region

The number of farms managed by agricultural operators residing in the National Capital Region (NCR) increased by 50.8 percent, from 15.1 thousand in 1991 to 22.8 thousand in 2002. Likewise, the total area of farms increased by 33.5 percent during the period mentioned. However, the average size of farms decreased from 3.5 hectares in 1991 to 3.1 hectares in 2002. The current average number of parcels per farm was estimated at 1.5 parcels.
