Employment Rate Recorded at 92.6 Percent in January 2011 Results from the January 2011 Labor Force Survey (LFS)

The January 2011 Labor Force Survey (LFS) placed the employment rate at 92.6 percent. This figure is not significantly different from the estimate reported in January last year, which was 92.7 percent.

Self-employed workers without any paid employee constituted 29.5 percent of the total employed while employers in own family-operated farm or business made up 3.5 percent. The unpaid family workers accounted for 10.7 percent.

The employment rate or the proportion of employed persons to total labor force in October 2011 is estimated at 93.6 percent. This is higher than the estimate for October last year, which is 92.9 percent.

2011 Annual Labor and Employment Status (Comparative Annual Estimates for 2010 and 2011)

In 2011, out of the 61.9 million population 15 years old and over, about 40.0 million were in the labor force or economically active. This figure translates to an annual labor force participation rate (LFPR) of 64.6 percent. In 2010, the LFPR was 64.1 percent. Among regions, MIMAROPA and Northern Mindanao registered the highest annual LFPR both at 70.0 percent, while ARMM posted the lowest at 55.6 percent (Table 1).

Employed Women

The estimated number of employed persons based on the October 2008 Labor Force Survey is 34.5 million. Of
this number, 38.4 percent are women (13.3 million). This translates to an employment rate of 93.5 percent for women, higher than the employment rate of 93.0 percent for men. Two regions register a high employment rate among women, with 97 for every 100 of the regions’ labor force reported as employed in October 2008. These are Cagayan Valley (96.8%) and Zamboanga Peninsula (96.6%). Only NCR registers an employment rate lower than 90 percent (88.3%).
