Davao Oriental: The Slowest Growing Province in Southern Mindanao

The 2000 Census of Population and Housing (Census 2000) results showed that Davao Oriental registered a total population of 446,191 persons, higher by 32,719 persons over the 1995 results. This figure translated to 1.64 percent annual growth rate, from 0.87 percent during the 1990 to 1995 period. A corresponding increase on the number of households was also recorded, from 78,553 in 1995 to 86,569 households in 2000. This resulted to an average household size of 5.15 persons, lower than the average household size of 5.26 in 1995.

Davao del Sur: 2000 Dependency Ratio Down by Three Persons From 1995

The population of Davao del Sur, as of May 1, 2000, was 758,801 persons. This was up by 81,732 persons as compared to 677,069 persons in the 1995 Census of Population. The highest annual population growth rate recorded for Davao del Sur since 1903 was during the intercensal period 1948 to 1960 at an annual population growth rate of 9.83 percent. The lowest was during the period 1903 to 1918 at 0.91 percent. The annual population growth rate for the period 1995 to 2000 was 2.47 percent. If the current growth rate continues, the population of Davao del Sur was expected to double in 28 years.

Davao: Dependency Ratio Down to 68

Davao recorded a total of 743,811 persons in the 2000 Census of Population and Housing (Census 2000), higher by 72,478 persons as compared to 671,333 persons recorded in the 1995 Census of Population. The highest population growth rate recorded for Davao since 1970 was during the intercensal period 1970 to 1975 at an average annual growth rate of 6.60 percent. The annual population growth rate of 2.2 percent for the period 1995 to 2000, on the other hand, was the lowest growth rate recorded for Davao province. If the current growth rate continues, the population of Davao was expected to double in 31 years.

Cotabato: Close to One Million Persons

The 2000 Census of Population and Housing (Census 2000) results showed that Cotabato registered a total population of 958,643 persons, higher by 95,977 persons over the 1995 Census of Population (POPCEN) results. This figure recorded a 2.30 percent annual population growth rate, lower by 0.38 percentage point than the annual population growth rate during the 1990 to 1995 period. A corresponding increase on the number of households was also recorded at 188,581 households, higher by 28,691 households over the 1995 figure. This resulted to an average household size of 5.08 persons, slightly higher than the average household size (5.07 persons) recorded five years ago and the national average of five persons.

Compostela Valley: Young Population Dominated the Newly Formed Province

The population of Compostela Valley, as of May 2000 was 580,244 persons. This was up by 60,134 persons as compared to 520,110 persons in 1995. The highest population growth rate recorded for Compostela Valley since 1970 was during the intercensal period 1975 to 1980 at an annual growth rate of 6.33 percent. The lowest was during the period 1990 to 1995 at 2.07 percent. The annual growth rate for the period 1995 to 2000 was 2.37 percent.
