One in Every Ten Families Gives Money, Gift, or Favor to Facilitate Availing of a Service from a Government Office (Results from the 2010 Annual Poverty Indicators Survey)

According to the 2010 Annual Poverty Indicators Survey (APIS) conducted by the National Statistics Office in August 2010, four in every ten families (41.3%) nationwide had at least one member who purposely saw a government official or personnel or visited a government office to secure permit or licenses, pay taxes, avail of social services or seek assistance from police or court during the 12 month-period prior to the survey

Incidence of Families Experiencing Hunger is Highest in Eastern Visayas (Results from the 2011 Annual Poverty Indicators Survey)

According to the results of the 2011 Annual Poverty Indicator Survey (APIS), which covered around 51,000 sample households nationwide, 16 percent of families in Eastern Visayas experienced hunger in the three months prior to the conduct of the survey in July 2011. The survey also revealed that at least one in ten families in SOCCSKSARGEN (13.0%), Caraga (11.7%), and Northern Mindanao (10.1%) experienced hunger during the same period (Table 1). In the survey, families who experienced hunger refer to those who answered “Yes” to the survey question, “During the past three months, did you or any member of your family experienced hunger because you did not have money to buy food?”.

Highlights of the 1998 Annual Poverty Indicators Survey (APIS)

Of the 14.37 million families, 5.75 million belonged to the lowest 40% income group while 8.62 million in the highest 60% income bracket. In terms of percentage to total families, families in the highest 60% income strata got the biggest percentage in almost all indicators. But in terms of the percentage to the total families within each income strata, families in the lowest 40% income strata are not far off from families in the highest 60%.

Based on the results of the 2007 Annual Poverty Indicators Survey, 38.0 percent of families in the bottom 30% income stratum do not have electricity in their homes compared to 6.5 percent among families in the upper 70% income stratum. The bottom 30% of all families in this report represents the poor families.

Characteristics of Poor Families in the Philippines (Findings from the 2008 Annual Poverty Indicators Survey)

Heads of the families belonging to the bottom 30% income stratum tend to be less educated compared to heads of families in the upper 70% income stratum. The bottom 30% of all families in this report represents the poor families. Two out of three (65%) family heads belonging to the bottom 30% income stratum had at most an elementary education (Table 1). In comparison, 34 percent of family heads belonging to the upper 70% income stratum were of similar levels of education (no grade completed/pre-school, 2%; elementary undergraduates, 15%; and elementary graduates, 17%).
